I arrived to school this morning and was told I didn't look like I was dressed for a zoo trip. Apparently the 6th grade teacher took me up on my offer to help chaperone the zoo field trip and forgot to let me know. I had to drive back home to change, then drive myself to the zoo, which was fine with me. A bus full of 60 screaming kids was not something I was looking forward to. (Oh and I was met at the door to the house by Pooh, who told me Abbie was ready to go - and there sat Abbie with Pooh's backpack on her back. What a cutie pie.)
Despite the fact that it was overcast and a bit chilly, it was a perfect trip. It was actually a great day for me to go, since I had no classes and was bound to be at my desk getting teary eyed every time I thought of the Schmoog. A zoo trip was just what the doctor ordered.
I had 4 boys who I had to keep track of, and they were delightful. They were on a "speed tour" of the zoo, which was fine with me. I did manage to keep them at the polar bear exhibit for a bit, but mainly it was Wilhelm who kept them there. He loved the brisk morning and was playing big time with his toys in the water. At one point he saw a yellow container up on his flat rock that he decided he needed, so he climbed out of the water, up on the rock, grabbed it, then made a big show of winding up with his head several times before tossing it in the water and then leaping on top of it. (Not obvious that I love polar bears or anything) :) As a matter of fact, here he is with said yellow container. I didn't get a video of the leap, but one of my girls did, so I can't wait to see that.

Also of note were the chimpanzees who were playing high up in their artificial tree, and the 3 lion cubs who were just huge compared to last year, and the male lion cub who was practicing his roar for us. He was rather impressive.
All in all a good day. Lots of walking, but tons of fun.
