My alarm went off at 5:15 this morning. Yikes.
The Race for the Cure was this morning at Meredith. We had a team from school walking the women's race at 8AM, and mom and I joined. What we didn't realize is that the competitive version of the race, which used to also start at 8AM, was starting at 7AM. So mom was the only one in the group signed up for the 7AM race. Being the good daughter that I am, I switched my signup and we did the competitive race together.
Not that I thought I was going to win anything. But last year, there were no participants in the 70+ age group, and none of the awards were presented. Gorgeous handmade bowls made by local artists. Mom and I thought that that certainly shouldn't happen again this year, so she signed up for the timed race, thinking she was a shoo in for a prize.
We did pretty well. It was cooler this morning, but pretty humid. According to our watches, we finished in just over 46 minutes. Not mom's best time ever, but still darn good for a 77 year old lady.
We hung out after our race to wait for the results (I just knew she was going to get a bowl!) and for the rest of the team to finish the 8AM race. Results were posted... Mom was fifth. 5th! Can you believe it! I think she was pretty disappointed, and so was I. There was such a crowd around the boards I couldn't see the times of the people that beat her, so we're waiting patiently for them to be posted online.
In the meantime, we're plotting her revenge for the Women's Distance Festival in September.
Go Mom!
