We drove to Sanford yesterday to return Alfred to the breeder.  Although I wasn't particularly attached to the cat, it was still hard to do.  After all, he had lived with us for 6 years and although not overly friendly, he did have some endearing moments.

Johnny (the breeder) was perfectly understanding.  He agreed that it sounded like Fred would be best as an only cat - that something Grendel and Bronte were doing to him was stressing him out.  He asked if we'd tried changing litter, adding a new litterbox - all the usual stuff.  Of course we had.  And we'd been honest with all of the people that he sent our way, and the pooping on the floor thing seemed to have chased most of them away.

The cattery walls are for the most part just chickenwire.  But Fred has his own private suite with walls for the first few days to give him the opportunity to get adjusted.  And a window looking out into the driveway.  As we walked back down the hall of the cattery, Pooh of course was admiring the cute kittens, especially the one sitting in his food bowl.  I said "no kittens!".  At which point Johnny said, "Well, let me tell you, I have these two 2 year old females, one silver one brown, that I can no longer use for breeding.  You're welcome to have either one".  Aye aye aye.  I can't imagine anyone would drop off one cat and pick up another.  Even if I did want another cat, out of respect for Fred I couldn't leave with one the same day we dropped him off, and from someone in his "family" nonetheless.

I will kind of miss Fred.  But not really.  No more tumbleweeds of long cat fur that need vacuuming almost daily.  No more pooping on the kitchen floor.  I hope that Fred finds a great home.

Oh, and that window I mentioned?  As we were driving off, he was sitting in it, staring at us.  Talk about trying to make us feel guilty!
